Analyze employee feedback to identify gaps in the organizational structure that prevent effective work flow. Not a science person? That's OK on the ACT. In this post, we’ll continue a section-by-section analysis comparing the ACT to the SAT. As both tests are now equally weighted and equally accepted by colleges, the choice between them falls to the student’s own strategy and preference. Although the differences between the two are less stark than much reporting on the tests would have students believe, a familiarity with the specifics of each test is still an important tool in a student’s decision-making process. We’ll be going over the two tests, doing side-by-side comparisons of each section, to give an idea of how preparation for each may differ. In previous blogs on this subject, we’ve covered the Math and the Essay sections. These sections are generally more similar than different. The section in which the two tests most diverge, however, is the Science section on the ACT. This section does not have an equivalent on the SAT, as the SAT does not cover science. For this reason, the ACT is often thought of as being right only for students who are very strong in science. However, that’s not actually the case. The Science section is much less difficult than it appears, and is one one of the sections on the test most similar to the SAT in approach and question type. It does not require a mastery of numerous subjects in science, or a particular academic strength in the area. Instead, the section tests logic and reading comprehension. It is similar in that way to the Math sections on the SAT, in which many questions can actually be solved by logic. Because the ACT is administered to a large number of students whose year, age, and high school science curriculum vary wildly, it cannot test hard knowledge of any one subject, or focus closely in Physics, Biology, or Chemistry. The test is designed to touch on all three, while remaining accessible to students who have not taken one (or more) of these subjects. What are the facts? The Science section is 35 minutes long and contains 40 questions, broken into six or seven small sections. Each section is based on a set of data, usually involving multiples charts and/or graphs as well as a few dense paragraphs of information on the experiment presented. Some more difficult passages will give few or no graphs and rely only on extensive text. There are three types of questions on the test, presented here in ascending order of difficulty: 1. Data Representation: Data Representation asks the student to read and understand the data presented by the charts and graphs in the given information. 2. Research Summaries:Research summaries ask the student to analyze that data or apply it to a related question about how it could be otherwise understood or used. 3. Conflicting Viewpoints: Conflicting Viewpoints involve choosing between several hypotheses on the given data, and using the information presented to determine which viewpoint is correct. All of this can be done with careful close reading and analysis, the same skills necessary for the Reading Comprehension sections of both tests. In fact, the skills that the student will practice with their ACT tutor in approaching the science section more closely resemble those for Reading than for Math. Working on the science section, a standardized test preparation tutor can help their student to apply Reading Comprehension skills to charts, graphs, and statistics in this section of the test The Science section therefore shouldn’t discourage students who are not strong in science academically from taking the ACT. Preparation for this section in one-on-one tutoring is equally crucial for students at any level in their science classes in high school, and can be equally effective for any student who commits to studying the material and learning the most useful strategies with which to approach this section.

Oedipus is so arrogant and self-confident that he challenges the will of the gods (hence, the entire basis of the play). One of the early examples of dramatic irony in the play is during the scene in which Oedipus accuses Creon of plotting against him with Teiresias, an old, blind prophet. Creon is a great friend to Oedipus, and Teiresias, by at first refusing to reveal the murderer is trying to protect Oedipus, not plot against him. This is ironic because what is actually occurring is the opposite of what is perceived. Additionally, it is extremely ironic that Teiresias is blind. His old age represents his wisdom, and his physical blindness is ironic because he is able to see the reality in Oedipus situation. Conversely, Oedipus is not physically blind, but is unable to see the truth. During the play Teiresias reminds Oedipus of his ability to solve the riddle of the Sphinx in the past, and he presents another riddle. The irony of the riddles is that although Oedipus had solved the first one to lift Thebes plague, he did not realize that it was symbolic of his own life. To contribute to the irony, Oed ipus curses Laius murderer and vows to avenge the former kings death. He is virtually condemning himself. His speeches foreshadow his imminent doom- he is destined by the gods to be a victim, and there is nothing he can do to escape the fate he once learned of from the oracle. As a tragic hero, Oedipus is the classic definition. He has many characteristics of a great leader- strong, upright, clever, proud, arrogant, etc. However, these attributes also add to his downfall. He makes, rash, hasteful decisions at times, especially in front of the people. When Teiresias and Creon encourage him to speak privately of what they have discovered, he refuses to listen because he cannot imagine that it would possibly regard a matter that would defame him. Oedipus is shocked when Teiresias tells him the truth, and then reverses the accusation by declaring that Teiresias actually is responsible or Laius murder. Thus, we can see that Oedipus is rich, proud, and stubborn. He does not wish to see the reality of the situation- and his virtual blindness will lead him make himself physically blind in the end when he finally sees his mistakes. Slavery in the United States In the history of the United States nothing has brought more shame to the face of America than the cold, premeditated method of keeping black people in captivity. People from England who migrated to America used many different methods to enslave black people and passed them down through the children. These methods were quite effective, so effective that these slaves were kept in captivity for over two hundred years in this country. It was the rain of terror that kept black people in fear of their lives for so long. The invention of the gun back in the fifth-teenth century was the main reason that these people were able to go to another continent and enslave so many people. These people from Africa were mistreated very badly right from the start both mentally and physically. They were packed very tightly on ships for months at a time chained to each other with no place to go to the bathroom, little water to drink, and hardly anything to eat. As the population constantly increased in the colonies during the 1600s, so did the demand for slavery especially in the southern colonies where the big plantations were. These plantations were very lucrative since the owners had free manual labor and they could keep all the profit from the crops for themselves. They also had to justify what they were doing to themselves so what they did was tell themselves that these slaves were barbaric and not smart enough to be civilized. These slave owners also owned huge houses in the middle of their plantations and thought of themselves as noblemen. In acuality, it was the slaves who were living nobly while the Europeans were living barbaricly. The Europeans who owned slaves also thought that the slaves were not smart enough because they could not speak English and they did not have a written language. This was proven not to be true either because the second generation of slaves learned the English language with no trouble at all. Once the sl aves started having children, the demand for slaves dropped while the market for selling slaves and their children went up. This was another way they kept slaves in slavery. If a person was born to a slave, he or she was automatically born into a life of slavery. The owners would also keep their slaves ignorant. They would not teach them how to read or write. If they could read, they would have been shocked to find that these colonists believed that every man is born with the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They also would have known that these colonists left the last country that they were in for this same reason. Their ignorance to this fact is not what kept them in slavery for so though. What kept them obedient was the fact that they knew they would be made an example of if they tried to escape. Second of all, they had no where to escape to. It was not like they had a friends house to hide out in. They knew if they rebelled or acted up, they would be either beaten very badly with whips, punished by starving in the basement, or just shot. I am sure they all wanted to rebel, but they saw what happened to the ones who did rebel so most of them decided not to. As time went on, slaves were getting smarter and were learning how to read and write. They started learn that not all black people in the country were enslaved. By word of mouth or by reading, they started to learn that slavery did not exist up north. Then they started to learn that not every white person was out to get them if they knew that they were planning to escape. This was a very dangerous plan though. Some white people would actua lly help some slaves escape. This was called the Underground Railroad. One of the toughest nuts for any novelist to crack is where to start. How do I know? Well, two-thirds of my 192 published books are novels, so I’ve faced this dilemma nearly 130 times. Trust me, it doesn’t get easier. But there are common errors to avoid. I know because I’ve made them. And because I love asking agents and editors what mistakes they see in beginners’ manuscripts. Ready for the most common error? The apparent feeling that you must start by describing the setting of your story. Setting is important; don’t get me wrong. But we’ve all been sent napping by novels whose covers and titles promise to transport us, and yet begin with some variation of: The house sat in a deep wood surrounded by†¦ Gag. Pro tip: Readers have little patience for description. In fact, they often skip it to get to the action. If your main question is how to describe the setting, I have a simple answer: Don’t. But, you say, I have to establish where we are and set the scene, don’t I? Yes. Like any other reader, I like to get an immediate feel for where and when things take place. But we writers make a mistake when we make that- describing the setting- a separate element. If you do it at the beginning, you should do it for every scene in a different setting, right? Sorry, but that will quickly transport your reader from slumber to death. Well, you say, how do I set the scene without describing it? You don’t. But you make description part of the narrative, part of the story. It will become almost invisible, because mentions of what things look and feel and sound like will register in the theater of the readers’ minds, but they will be concentrating on the action, the dialogue, the tension and drama and conflict that keep them turning the pages. In the end they won’t remember how you worked in everything they needed to fully enjoy the experience. Consider these setting examples: Describing the setting of a story before starting the action: London in the 1860s was a cold, damp, foggy city crisscrossed with cobblestone streets and pedestrians carefully dodging the droppings of steeds that pulled all manner of public conveyance. One such pedestrian was Lucy Knight, a beautiful, young, unattached woman in a hurry to get to Piccadilly Circus. An eligible bachelor had asked her to meet him there†¦ I shouldn’t have to inform you that such an opening is all telling, no showing, and that the question of how to describe the setting has been answered, but not correctly. Describing the setting by layering it in tothe story: London’s West End, 1862 Lucy Knight mince-stepped around clumps of horse dung as she hurried toward Regent Street. Must not be late, she told herself. What would he think? She carefully navigated the cobblestones as she crossed to hail a Hansom Cab- which she preferred for its low center of gravity and smooth turning. Lucy did not want to appear as if she’s been tossed about in a carriage, especially tonight. â€Å"Not wearin’ a ring, I see,† the driver said as she boarded. â€Å"I beg your pardon?† â€Å"Nice lookin’ lady like yourself out alone after dark in the cold fog†¦Ã¢â‚¬  â€Å"You needn’t worry about me, sir. I’m only going to the circus.† â€Å"Piccadilly it is, Ma’am.† First, the location tag, flush left before the first paragraph, saves us a lot of narration which can be used to let the story emerge. And yes, the second sample is longer, but that’s because we’re not telling, we’re showing. The reader learns everything about the character from the action and dialogue, rather than from just being told through description. So try the technique you’ve likely heard about since the day you decided to study writing: Show, Don’t Tell You’ll have to remind yourself of this daily for the rest of your life, but once you add it to your writing toolbelt, you’ll find it adds power to your prose and keeps your reader’s interest. The key, as you can see from the examples above, is to layer in your description. Maybe when Lucy meets her new gentleman friend, he grabs her and pulls her into an alley, saying, â€Å"Come here where no one will see us.† There she might scrape her knuckles against a brick wall and wish both hands were free so she could tighten her coat against the wind. Incorporating description that way- showing rather than telling- can alone revolutionize your novel. Apply This Setting Technique Immediately and see how it picks up the pace and adds power. It will force you to highlight only the most important details, triggering the theater of your reader’s mind. If it’s not important enough to become part of the action, your reader won’t miss it anyway. But you’ve read classic novelists who use description exactly the way I’m advising against. What gives? Two things: 1- If those novels were written before TV and movies (let alone smart phones), they were aimed at audiences who loved to take the time to settle in with a book for days at a time. 2- If those novels were written in our generation and still succeeded with that kind of writing, it’s because the author is a master. If you can write at that level, you can break all the rules you want. I can’t, so I’ll stick with what works for today’s readers. How about you?
